Jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan

8. Jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan
Demi karier duniamu jangan dekat-dekat kepada-Nya.

11. Jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan.
Sebab ia menciptakanmu tanpa kepentingan. Ia mengasuhmu tanpa meminta imbalan, sedangkan hidupmu adalah kepentingan, dan setiap langkahmu mendambakan imbalan.

12. Jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan
Kecuali kau tangguh memanggul ujian.

13. Jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan
Kecuali engkau ridha kehilangan dunia. Kecuali engkau ikhlas kehilangan dirimu sendiri. Hilang dari yang dinamakan kehidupan. Dirimu sendiri hilang dari dirimu sendiri.

14. Hayo… gimana
Maka jangan dekat-dekat kepada Tuhan. Berpalinglah dari asal usul dan arah tujuan. Mengembaralah di Bumi dengan kemerdekaan. Jilat sana, jilat sini, cari yang paling menguntungkan.

Smelly Soulmate

It all started with a timeline post by a broadcast account on LINE, about how Rasulullah sent a “female investigator” to secretly sniff the woman he intended to marry. Yea, you heard it right, *sniffing* the bride-to-be, in two place: armpits and mouth/breath to be exact. Additionally the secret agent was told to peek on the bride-to-be’s leg veins.

My reaction to this was:

Is this a shahih hadith? 😮

Anyway, the source article is in Indonesian, you can click here to read it if you want.

In retrospect, putting aside all yikes and ewws, the article explained that Rasulullah did that to find out the woman’s health, which is makes sense. Another reason is to see whether the woman takes care of herself well enough and being considerate to others (by not making people around here fainted by her body odors, LOL.. I’m so curious how ancient deodorants look like!)

Anyway, scientists nowadays said there might be more about body odors and life partner choices..

Sweaty T-Shirts and Human Mate Choice:

Maybe it’s not similar interests, horoscope signs, looks, or proximity that make women and men fall in love. According to evolutionary scientists, when people throw up their hands and say “it was just chemistry,” they may be on to a fundamental factor in mate choice.

Subtle chemical signals, or pheromones, have long been known to draw pairs together within the same species, and for a specific reason. In mice, for example, experiments showed that pheromones acted as attractants between males and females who were genetically similar except that they differed in a certain type of immune system gene. That difference is actually a survival benefit: The combination of two individuals’ different MHC (major histocompatibility locus) genes gives their offspring an advantage in beating back disease organisms.

So the mice could smell a genetic difference. But could modern humans, who aren’t known for a particularly good sense of smell, also make that distinction?

In the first “sweaty T-shirt” experiment, a Swiss zoologist, Claus Wedekind, set up a test of women’s sensitivity to male odors. He assembled volunteers, 49 women and 44 men selected for their variety of MHC gene types. He gave the men clean T-shirts to wear for two nights and then return to the scientists.

In the laboratory, the researchers put each T-shirt in a box equipped with a smelling hole and invited the women volunteers to come in, one at a time, and sniff the boxes. Their task was to sample the odor of seven boxes and describe each odor as to intensity, pleasantness, and sexiness.

The results were striking. Overall, the women preferred the scents of T-shirts worn by men whose MHC genes were different from their own.

The experiment did not test men’s perceptions of female scents, but the results certainly suggest that evolution has provided humans, not just mice, with a transmitter and receiver for genetic information that could influence mate choice.

And all this even before the first date!

So what do you think? Maybe this will be more reasons to smell you significant other..

After all, to find out how different your MHC gene types with him is more important than your zodiac signs, girls!

How do you build a habit?

So this morning I bumped into an interesting “how-to article” @ quora digest:

Answer by Georgio Daher:

Here’s James Clear‘s great guide:

According to researchers at Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviors on any given day. [1]
Understanding how to build new habits (and how your current ones work) is essential for making progress in your health, your happiness, and your life in general.
But there can be a lot of information out there and most of it isn’t very simple to digest. To solve this problem and break things down in a very simple manner, I have created this strategy guide for building new habits that actually stick.
Even more detailed information is available in my free guide, Transform Your Habits, but the basic principles mentioned in this article will be more than enough to get you going.

1. Start with an incredibly small habit.

Make it so easy you can’t say no.
—Leo Babauta

When most people struggle to stick with a new habit, they say something like, “I just need more motivation.” Or, “I wish I had as much willpower as you do.”
This is the wrong approach. Research shows that willpower is like a muscle. It gets fatigued as you use it throughout the day. Another way to think of this is that your motivation ebbs and flows. It rises and falls. Stanford professor BJ Fogg calls this the “motivation wave”.

Solve this problem by picking a new habit that is easy enough that you don’t need motivation to do it. Rather than starting with 50 pushups per day, start with 5 pushups per day. Rather than trying to meditate for 10 minutes per day, start by meditating for one minute per day. Make it easy enough that you can get it done without motivation.
Further reading: Identity-Based Habits: How to Actually Stick to Your Goals This Year

2. Increase your habit in very small ways.

Success is a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.
—Jim Rohn

One percent improvements add up surprisingly fast. So do one percent declines.
Rather than trying to do something amazing from the beginning, start small and gradually improve. Along the way, your willpower and motivation will increase, which will make it easier to stick to your habit for good.
Further reading: This Coach Improved Every Tiny Thing by 1 Percent

3. As you build up, break habits into chunks.

If you continue adding one percent each day, then you’ll find yourself increasing very quickly within two or three months. It is important to keep each habit reasonable, so that you can maintain momentum and make the behavior as easy as possible to accomplish.
Building up to 20 minutes of meditation? Split it into two segments of 10 minutes at first.
Trying to do 50 push-ups per day? Five sets of 10 might be much easier as you make your way there.
Further reading: I’m Using These 3 Simple Steps to Actually Stick with Good Habits

4. When you slip, get back on track quickly.

The best way to improve your self-control is to see how and why you lose control.
—Kelly McGonigal

Top performers make mistakes, commit errors, and get off track just like everyone else. The difference is that they get back on track as quickly as possible.
European Journal of Social Psychology has shown that missing your habit once, no matter when it occurs, has no measurable impact on your long-term progress. Rather than trying to be perfect, abandon your all-or-nothing mentality.
You shouldn’t expect to fail, but you should plan for failure. Take some time to consider what will prevent your habit from happening. What are some things that are likely to get in your way? What are some daily emergencies that are likely to pull you off course? How can you plan to work around these issues? Or, at least, how you can bounce back quickly from them and get back on track?
You just need to be consistent, not perfect. Focus on building the identity of someone who never misses a habit twice.
Further reading: How to Stop Procrastinating by Using the “Seinfeld Strategy”

5. Be patient. Stick to a pace you can sustain.

Learning to be patient is perhaps the most critical skill of all. You can make incredible progress if you are consistent and patient.
If you are adding weight in the gym, you should probably go slower than you think. If you are adding daily sales calls to your business strategy, you should probably start with fewer than you expect to handle. Patience is everything. Do Things You Can Sustain.
New habits should feel easy, especially in the beginning. If you stay consistent and continue increasing your habit it will get hard enough, fast enough. It always does.

A Girl Who Reads

First thing to say, I don’t own these words in italic below.

I don’t even know who Rosemary Urquico is, but it seems like this post spreads everywhere. Tumblr, blogger, wordpress.. and people starts wondering who she is. I even found an article titled “Rosemarie Urquico has been found!“.

Isn’t it slightly amusing? If I haven’t read about her before, I might think that she’s some kind of terrorist, criminal, or pirate. You know, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ thing? But I think she’s a genius. Maybe she never thought before, how her writing has been read by so many people. How internet made our world seems so small, how some words spread so fast and change people’s life. Wonderful, isn’t it?

Anyway, the first time I read it was on my friend’s tumblr blog, Sintia Pebriana. (Thanks Teh Sin 🙂 ) If you like it, I think you should click here to read her blog too.

I found this just.. beautiful. As simple as that, the reason why I post it here. This just made my day.

“Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.”

–Rosemary Urquico
